OH in Consultancy
Consultancies advise a range of businesses, often including Small and Medium-sized Enterprises

They may be independent companies, or linked to an insurer or equipment manufacturer. There are also some independent foundations, universities and trade associations who offer may consultancy, sometimes on a not-for-profit basis.
Hygienists in consultancy need the same technical skills as those in industry, and have the opportunity to acquire an incredibly broad experience of tackling different types of problems. This demands an ability to assimilate new situations very quickly and an unusually high degree of self-reliance.
Job seniority in consultancies runs parallel to industry
- A Hygiene technician takes routine measurements, usually under supervision, possibly in a defined subject area such as asbestos.
- A professional hygienist carries out surveys for a wide range of harmful agent.
- A consultant hygienist typically with at least five years practical experience, carries out surveys, investigations and reports for a wide range of industries and situations, with minimal supervision. Advises clients on control measures and implementation. May be involved in training.
- A senior consultant hygienist has many years of experience, with an established track record and a high professional reputation. Usually deals with senior management. Plans complex projects, oversees the work of junior staff, prepares policies and manages implementation for clients. Often a heavy involvement in training.
